He took part in the land rush in Oklahoma, farming in Woodward County, Oklahoma, before moving to California in 1920. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad in Orange and Riverside counties in California.

David’s family had lived in Decatur County, Indiana, for nine years before David was born. They left the state about 1838 for Knox County, Missouri. David’s widow and children moved to Payne County, Oklahoma, in the early 1890’s. David and his four brothers were farmers in Knox County, Missouri.

On 29 February 1864, David enlisted in Company E, 21st Missouri Infantry, as a Union soldier. On 25 February 1866, it was said that he deserted at Mobile, Alabama. An act of Congress on 5 July 1884 removed the charge of desertion and gave him an official discharge. David contacted tuberculosis while in the service, but did not die from it until 1878. Six of his ten children also died of tuberculosis.

The marriage between David’s son James and Maggie was a second marriage for both of them; her first husband was Hubert Edward Jurney.

The Mullin family immigrated to Indiana from Springboro, Warren County, Ohio, in 1831. Libby lived in Rock Creek Township and the town of Camden in Carroll County, Indiana, before leaving in 1909 to join her husband in St. Regis, Montana.

After the 1910 forest fire in which Libby and her family were refugees, she went to work for the railroad as a telegraph operator. Three of her daughters were also telegraph operators for the railroad. The West was a rugged, wild place at the time Libby Ray lived there, and it is said she never became reconciled to it. She always hoped to return to Indiana, and upon her death she was returned to be buried in Camden, Indiana, as was her husband.

He enlisted as a Private in Company A, 53rd Regiment of the Indiana Infantry Volunteers at Michigan City, Indiana, in April 1865. After being honorably discharged at Louisville, Kentucky, in July 1865, he returned to Marshall County and took up farming. He and his young family moved in 1882 to West Olive Township, Ottawa County, Michigan, then to Lowell Township, Kent County, Michigan, in 1890.
