In 1819, Mary Ann immigrated to Indiana from Lincoln County, Kentucky. She lived in Monroe County, where she married the widower Zebulon Smith. They moved to Orange County near where her parents lived in Washington County before immigrating to Clark County, Iowa, around 1855.

Robert’s parents came to Indiana from Jessamine County, Kentucky, before he was born. He and his family left the state about 1855 for Iowa. In northern Iowa, there were several meetings with Indians, so the family moved back to Clark County in southern Iowa before the 1860 census. After Robert’s second marriage, he moved to Worth County, Missouri. There were two other children born to Robert and Rachel.

Gabriel moved to Kansas about 1857 with his family, apparently leaving brother Francis W. behind in Indiana. He returned to Indiana, where he married and bought land in Jasper County in 1863 and in Newton County in 1864. He moved his family to Holt County, Missouri, in 1867, where they lived until 1893. Then they moved to Wright County, Missouri; the following year they moved again, this time to Cass County where they bought a home in the Pitts Chapel neighborhood.

Mary Ann’s aunt and uncle, Joseph D. and Sarah (Nowles) Yeoman, were the first white settlers in Jasper County, Indiana. Her great-grandfather, Stephen Yeoman, was a Revolutionary War veteran from New York. Six years after Gabriel’s death, Mary Ann moved to East Lynne with her unmarried daughter Alpha; they moved to Harrisonville in 1920.

The family came to the United States on 27 June 1903. They first lived in McDonald, Pennsylvania. They had two other children who died before 1910. Albert was naturalized in 1919 in Greene County, Indiana. He was a farmer and a coal miner. After his wife’s death, Albert returned to France. There he remarried and had another daughter. He was reunited with his American daughters in Detroit, Michigan, in the fall of 1952. Albert had forgotten most of the English he had learned, and they had forgotten most of the French they grew up with.

Hiram is reported to have had two children with Sarah Edwards.

Hiram graduated from Indiana Medical College, Indianapolis, in 1875 as an “allopath,” which is probably a general practitioner. His profession has also been listed as a “butcher.”

Arthur and Mary left Indiana prior to 1911 and went to Patton Station, Lawrence County, Illinois. They moved to western Illinois around World War I to join up with Arthur’s brother, Cyrus Austin. They moved to Wood River Township, Madison County, Illinois.

Arthur found work at the Western Cartridge Company, which is now the world-renown ammunitions and chemical manufacturer, Olin Corporation. Olin was founded at East Alton, Madison County, Illinois, in 1892 and is best known for supplying ammunition in time of war. Its most famous line is the Winchester Rifle and cartridges. Arthur worked for Western for 25 years before retiring in 1948.

They lived in Crawford and Knox counties while in Indiana.
