William Henry was a cabinet maker, a painter, a paperhanger, and sometimes built houses. He was called “Pilgrim” for a tune he used to whistle while working. His parents moved their family to Clarke County, Iowa in October 1855.

In 1819, Mary Ann immigrated to Indiana from Lincoln County, Kentucky. She lived in Monroe County, where she married the widower Zebulon Smith. They moved to Orange County near where her parents lived in Washington County before immigrating to Clark County, Iowa, around 1855.

Robert’s parents came to Indiana from Jessamine County, Kentucky, before he was born. He and his family left the state about 1855 for Iowa. In northern Iowa, there were several meetings with Indians, so the family moved back to Clark County in southern Iowa before the 1860 census. After Robert’s second marriage, he moved to Worth County, Missouri. There were two other children born to Robert and Rachel.

Mary’s parents moved the family to Iowa in 1855. They first lived in northern Iowa, and then moved to Clark County in southern Iowa before the 1860 census.

After her marriage, Mary lived in Clark County, Iowa, for a short while, then moved to the town of Winterset in Madison County, Iowa. Her husband was a painter and a paperhanger. Mary and William also had another daughter.
