Both Robert and his wife, Sarah, were born and raised in the Scotch-Irish community near Ireland, Dubois County, Indiana.

Robert was a carpenter and moved his family west as the railroads opened the west with opportunities for those with building skills. By September 1878, they were in Walton, Kansas, and by March 1891 had moved on to Pueblo, Colorado.

In 1893 they moved back to the Kansas-Oklahoma area where Robert took part in making the Cherokee Strip Run. He homesteaded 11 miles northwest of Enid, Oklahoma, about four miles west and one mile south of Kremlin.

Samuel resided at Eel River Township, Allen County, Indiana, and Union Township, LaPorte County, Indiana. In 1859 he emigrated from Indiana to Forest City, Winnebago County, Iowa, and in 1861 he moved to Norway Township, Winnebago County.

According to family tradition, Samuel had a previous marriage to a woman who was the mother of Philip.

Samuel was elected county judge in Winnebago County, Iowa, in 1863 and re-elected in 1865 and 1867. When that position was abolished in 1867, he became the county auditor for one year.

Samuel’s son, Samuel W., died on 9 June 1864, while serving during the Civil War. He was marching with Company B of the Iowa Volunteers en route to Memphis, Tennessee.

In the fall of 1840, Charles Bentley, along with his brothers, Joseph, Ezra, and Silas, and their families, moved west. They left Berkshire County, Massachusetts, crossed Lake Erie on a ferryboat, and followed the Wabash River to settle in the woods of southwestern Wabash County, Indiana. They had an ashery west of Pioneer. The Baker family had settled in Wabash County in 1841 on the Indian Reservation. In 1853, Joseph Bentley went to see what the land was like to the west. The Bentley brothers sold their homes and started west about the first of September 1854. There were four couples and fourteen children in horse- drawn covered wagons. They reached Bangor Township, Marshall County, Iowa, on 12 October 1854.

After the death of Isaac Johnson in 1902, Mary and her children, (with the exception of Andrew, who had settled in Washington earlier,) all took out homesteads in Grant County, Washington.

In 1900 Andrew and Victoria Johnson emigrated from Grammer, Bartholomew County, Indiana, to Wilbur, Lincoln County, Washington. From Wilbur, the family moved to Grant County, Washington, where they homesteaded. After proving the Grant County homestead, Andrew and Victoria sold the land and returned to Grammer, Bartholomew County, Indiana. After about two years, they moved to Lincoln County, Washington.

Saphronia (Carpenter) Allison was Mary Delanzo Carpenter’s sister.

Thomas Murphy served in Company G, 145th Indiana Regiment, during the Civil War. He and his second wife Mary Delanzo (Carpenter) Murphy emigrated from Jennings County, Indiana, to Grant Township, Riley County, Kansas, in 1865. Mary and Saphronia were sisters. Thomas Jefferson Murphy claimed 21 children.
