Additional information about person:
His Father was Mathias Zener a Hessian Solder in the Revolutionary War who was captured at the Battle of Yorktown and remained in America after the war. He married a German/American woman in Virginia after the war and died in Clark County Indiana in 1815.

By 1812 he was in Kentucky as he fought in the War of 1812 with the Kentucky Militia, married in 1818 in Breckenridge County, Kentucky – War of 1812 Bounty Land in Jefferson County, Indiana, all children born there.

During the Civil War, David Zener was one of those who opposed slavery and would purchase no products produced in the south – the family raised sheep and even imported silk worms and planted Mulberry Trees to feed them so they could weave all their own clothing. The name Zener is spelled various ways the most common being Zener or Zenor but those were not the only ones.

Samuel served in the 43rd Indiana Regiment during the Civil War. He returned to Indiana to muster in with his brothers and brothers-in-law on 18 February 1865. He mustered out as a corporal on 14 June 1865.

Samuel lived in Jefferson County and then in Zenas, Jennings County, Indiana, before leaving in 1862. According to the Paris Beacon, he “was one of Paris’ most highly respected citizens, having been successfully engaged in the insurance and real estate business in this city for several years.”

Robert’s parents came to Indiana from Butler, Pennsylvania. Robert quit school after the fourth grade. He also lost an eye while chopping wood, but after marrying and having a family, he earned a degree in Civil Engineering.

Local citizens razzed him about leaving home at age 62 to build houses in Barrington, Illinois. He not only won contracts to build them, but his houses were featured in the Roto Gravure section of the Chicago Tribune.

After the banks failed in 1933, he made his home in Cincinnati, Ohio, with his daughter Margaret.
