Thomas and his brother, John A., moved to the Decatur area in 1832 from somewhere in Kentucky. They purchased land together but a year after Thomas married, he purchased land in Lebanon, Boone County, Indiana. John followed and married in 1840.

Dr. James McWorkman, also a resident of Indiana, asked Thomas to move to Missouri and around 1869, Thomas did so. His brother remained in Indiana. He was a farmer in Jefferson City, Cole County, Missouri, and both he and Martha died there.

John came with his father, a Quaker of Randolph County, North Carolina, when he migrated to Indiana in 1822. John was a Quaker also and in the nursery business with his brother Henderson in Indiana. He remained behind until 1841 when he moved to Salem, Iowa, to join his brothers in the nursery they had started there. In 1850 he moved on once again and started a nursery business in San Lorenzo, Alameda County, California.

The family came to Union Co., IN during the early 1830s. They moved to Hamilton Co., IN when Milton’s father received a land grant by 1840. Milton eventually moved to Cass Co., MO by the late 1860s and then settled in Labette Co., KS by the 1870s. Milton began as a farmer, the same as his parents. By the time he settled in Mound Valley, Labette County, KS, he had held several jobs which included merchant, postmaster, hotel clerk and gardener.

Mary Catherine’s father settled near Frankton in the 1830’s. Her first husband, John Wesley King, enlisted in October 1864 in the 17th Regiment, Indiana Infantry. He died of typhoid fever at the US Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky, during his service. His remains were later moved to Mount City National Cemetery.

Mary Catherine and her second husband moved to Edwards County, Kansas between 1875 and 1877. Their last five children were born in Edwards County. Mary died there and is buried in Trotter Cemetery.

Emaline and Evaline were twins. Mahlon, Henry Johnson “John”, Timothy, and Emaline are all buried in Barton County, Kansas.

John Wesley King left Indiana to serve in the Civil War and volunteered 28 October 1864, from Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. He died of typhoid fever at the post hospital in Paducah, Kentucky, and is buried in the U.S. military cemetery at Mound City, Illinois. Having left three young children and a 21-yearold widow, he illustrates the tragedy of the war between the states.

His wife Mary Catherine emigrated from Indiana for Kansas sometime before her death in 1903.
