Jane, her husband Charles, and some of their children are buried in Llwellyn Cemetery near Kirksville, Adair County, Missouri. Although Jane’s tombstone reads Jane E. and she was known as Jane, the 1880 Missouri census lists her as Elizabeth J. Her letters home to her widowed mother’s Hendricks County, Indiana, residence, related many of the facts concerning Jane and her family. These letters are in the possession of the contributor.

Prior to her marriage, Lydia Ann is said to have lived in an orphanage.

According to his Civil War records, Andrew and Lydia were married by Samuel K. Ross at Cincinnati, but the records were destroyed when a courthouse burned. Andrew was an octoroon whose grandfather, according to census records, was a “free mulatto”.

Andrew J. Murphy enlisted in the Union Army at Indianapolis on 18 August 1864 and served in a colored unit. After discharge he settled in Fairland Township, Shelby County, Indiana. In 1880 he emigrated with his family from Hymera, Sullivan County, Indiana, to Manhattan, Riley County, Kansas.

Richard emigrated from German Township, Bartholomew County, Indiana, to Bloomfield, Davis County, Iowa, in 1853.

All of Richard and Margaret’s sons volunteered and served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Richard, Jr. and James died in the war. George, the only son to have children, fathered eight children before he died at age 33 in 1878 of war-related injuries and illness.

Sarah Jane Crew/Cruz, Richard’s second wife, was a widow with a son, William.

In 1865 Richard and Jane, his second wife, moved from Iowa to Kansas, where he farmed
and operated a gristmill. They lived long and healthy lives until they died within hours of each other in 1896. Around 1878, the spelling of the family name was changed to Hendrixson for reasons unknown.
