Mother Laura CHAMBERS arrived Franklin Co. with family from Maryland in 1835. Harry’s early jobs were in a bicycle shop and as a moulder at Home Stove Co. in Indianapolis. Started Witte & Alexander handle mfg. factory with father-in-law Fred Witte in Greenfield in 1902 and moved factory to Charlottesville in 1903. Started Hillsboro Novelty Works in 1906 in Hillsboro. Moved to New Philadelphia, Ohio c1908 and started Columbia Mfg. Co. (wood handles) 1908-1918. Foreman, American Sheet & Tin Co. New Phila. OH 1918-1933. Owned Diamond Handle Co. 1929-1953 and Alexander Insurance Co. 1932-1953. Served on New Philadelphia City Council for several terms and was President @death. Joseph Aldolphus Whittaker’s last name was originally spelled “Whitaker”, but he changed it sometime while living in Johnson County because his mail kept getting mixed up with cousin J. Whitaker’s.

Joseph Aldolphus Whittaker is submitter’s grandfather. All of Joseph and Minnie’s children were born and died in Indiana except Rosa Leota (Whittaker) McElroy. Her family moved from Bloomington IN to Bloomington IL due to Mr. McElroy’s job with S. S. Kresge.

Lewis’ grandparents came to Indiana from Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, about 1830. They lived first in Harrison Township, Dearborn County, and later moved to New Trenton, Franklin County, Indiana in the 1840’s. Lewis left Indiana in 1881 for Gardner, Johnson County, Kansas. He later lived in Illinois and in Springfield, Massachusetts, before finally moving to Glenside, Pennsylvania.

Lewis was a teacher for a short time in Johnson County, Indiana, and married a teacher before joining Dodd, Mead & Company, where he sold encyclopedias for 20 years, but eventually left Dodd, Mead & Company. He moved to G & C Merrian & Company, where he became Vice President and a member of the board of directors.
