The Small family were Quakers who originally came from Wales. Joseph emigrated from Highland County, Ohio, before 1834 and immigrated to Sauk County, Wisconsin about 1851.

All of the children were born in Indiana, except for the youngest.

During his later years, Joseph married Isabel Moon, who was the mother-in-law of one of his sons.

Johnson lived in Shelby, Marion, Johnson, and Morgan counties in Indiana before emigrating in 1889. He lived in Bourbon County, Kansas; Oklahoma and Pottawatomie counties in Oklahoma; Vernon County, Missouri; and Quay County, New Mexico. He was in Company C, 79th Indiana Infantry, 1862-1865.

Solomon and his second wife, Elizabeth, moved to Mentone, Kosciusko County, Indiana, in 1839, locating two miles south of Mentone. Solomon was a prosperous farmer. In 1848 he registered his stock mark as follows: a swallow fork in the left ear and under bit in the same, a crop and under bit in the right ear.

Three years after Elizabeth’s death in 1841, Solomon married Sarah McCombs and after the tax assessment of 1864, they moved on to Cedar County, Iowa.
