William Hamblen

William Hamblen
b. 1833/4, Upper Salt Creek, Hamblen Township, Brown County, Indiana, to Pleasant and Amilda (Weddle) Hamblen
d. 7 March 1864

m. 13 February 1855, Brown County, Indiana
Elizabeth Huff
b. to James and Eleanor (Brummett) Huff

William was the grandson of Uriah Hamblen. He and Elizabeth moved shortly after their marriage to Marion County, Iowa, where William’s brother Uriah had moved the year before.

William enlisted as a private in Company C, 34th Iowa Infantry, on 2 January 1864. He entered the General Hospital at Davenport, Iowa, on 23 February 1864 on account of
measles, which he had contracted while on duty at Camp McClellan, and died 7 March 1864 of “acute bronchitis, supervening upon measles.” His body was returned to Brown County, Indiana, and he was buried there in the Taggart Cemetery. A. P. Hamblen arranged for a government issue marker for his grave in 1925 and John Wesley Hamblen, a great grandson, erected a conventional tombstone for him in 1987.

Elizabeth (Huff) Hamblen applied for her widow’s pension in Nashville, Brown County, Indiana, on 5 May 1864. However, she later applied for an increase in her pension in Mahaska County, Iowa, on 15 October 1866, indicating that she had returned to Iowa prior to that date.
