Otis attended Indiana University and earned an associate’s degree in education and an LLB from the School of Law. He taught elementary education in Posey County and later had an abstracting and title insurance company. Otis practiced law in Posey County from 1950 until his death in 1985.

Otis served during World War II in the 325th Glider Infantry of the 82nd Airborne Division.

Mary’s parents and older siblings came from Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, to Posey County, Indiana, on 31 May 1853. After her father died in 1862, she and her mother went to live with an older sister and her husband in Henderson, Kentucky. Mary’s sister died in 1872. Two years later, Mary married her sister’s widower. He had a grocery store in Henderson. In 1880, they moved to a farm in White County, Illinois.

Philo’s parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles came to Posey County, Indiana, from Cayuga County, New York, about 1820. In 1857, Philo purchased land in Andrew County, Missouri. He moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1877. By the summer of 1880, he had moved again, this time to St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri. His final move was to Dawson County, Nebraska, in 1885, and he died there in 1888.

Philo was engaged in agriculture and livestock. His son, Joseph, allegedly committed suicide on 27 January 1880, in Buchanan County, Missouri. There was initially some suspicion that it might have been a homicide rather than a suicide.
