Neil was a miller in northern California. Upon moving to Los Angeles, he was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad. One source refers to Neil’s wife as Elizabeth Ann Maybelle.

Hiram is reported to have had two children with Sarah Edwards.

Hiram graduated from Indiana Medical College, Indianapolis, in 1875 as an “allopath,” which is probably a general practitioner. His profession has also been listed as a “butcher.”
