In 1853 Seth left Indiana and bought land in Wapello County, Iowa. Ten years later he moved to Decatur County and then to Van Wert in 1885.

Seth was in Company F, 7th Iowa Infantry from 22 July 1861 until his discharge at Pittsburg, Tennessee, on 14 March 1862. He lived mostly from farming and began preaching as a local preacher in 1869.
