Thomas immigrated to Indiana from Butler County, Ohio, about 1810-1815. He emigrated from Franklin County, Indiana, to Sangamon County, Illinois, about 1829. In Sangamon County, Illinois, Thomas lived near a small town in Salisbury Township that is now known as Salisbury, but in early census records, was called “Sackett Town” after Thomas Sackett.

In 1861 the Sangamon County board met to divide the county into 22 townships, one of which is Sackett Township after Thomas, who served as county commissioner in 1838-1839.
