Olney grew up outside of Brownsburg, Hendricks County, Indiana, and graduated from Brownsburg High School in 1898. Shortly after marrying in 1911, he left Indiana and moved to Denver, Colorado, where his son Lowell was soon born. After they divorced, his ex-wife raised Lowell until he was a teenager, then he went to live with his father. Between 1930 and 1940, Olney left Denver and moved to San Francisco, California.

Olney worked for a telephone company in Plainfield, Indiana, and when he moved west, he was a superintendent for Western Union Telegraph Company.

Willametta Pearl Rutledge

Willametta was named for her father but was known as Pearl.

Raleigh and Pearl had no children together but after Pearl’s sister Bertha Shockency died in 1912, they raised three of Bertha’s five children (Bertha’s husband had been committed to the Central State Hospital for the Insane in Indianapolis before her death).

Raleigh was a farmer and insurance salesman in Hendricks and Boone counties in Indiana. He and Pearl owned a farm in South Dakota and would drive out each year to visit it. They had just started back in 1950 when their car ended up in a pond. They died at the hospital within a few hours of each other.

Lucy’s family was from Clark County, Kentucky, but by the time she was born, they had settled outside Lizton, Hendricks County, Indiana. She and husband Charles left Indiana for Henry County, Illinois, between 1900 and 1905. They settled in Welsford, Kiowa County, Kansas, by 1910.

Lucy and Charles both had relatives who had already settled in Kansas—Lucy’s oldest sister, Mary Elizabeth (Rutledge) West, lived just a couple of counties away. Family tradition says that Lucy and her sister came back to Indiana periodically to visit. Lucy died at the age of 91.

Erastus grew up outside Brownsburg, Hendricks County, Indiana. His parents left Indiana shortly after their daughter Eva died in 1883, and they settled their family near Craig, Burt County, Nebraska. Burt County became home to several other Hendricks County families, including that of Erastus’ cousin, Annie (Tharp) McDonald. Shortly after 1900, Erastus moved his wife and children south, to Payne County, Oklahoma.

Lawrence was a resident of Brownsburg, Hendricks County, Indiana. He graduated from high school in 1914 and studied agriculture at Purdue University, but he left during his senior year (1916-17) to join the Army. He was assigned to the 8th U.S. Cavalry and served in Mexico in World War I. He was a career Army officer and retired after World War II as a colonel. During his service, he was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, and Monterey, California.

Lawrence and Katherine had no children and their marriage ended in divorce. He left Indiana and moved to Florida in 1964.

John left his wife and young son before 1880 and moved west to Burt and Thurston counties in Nebraska. His wife moved back in with her parents and later married a man who worked on her parents’ farm, Martin L. Tanner.

John came back to Indiana a few times to visit his siblings and one of his sisters, Melinda Jane (Scott) Martin, later settled in Burt and Thurston counties. One of his nephews took care of him in his later years.

He worked as a hired hand on a farm until his health began to fail. His will specifically stated that his siblings were not to receive anything from his estate, and he also left money to his son Sherman, “from whom I have not heard for a great many years.” It is not known if he was aware that his son had moved to Coles County, Illinois several years before.

Mary’s family moved from Clark County, Kentucky, to Lizton, Hendricks County, Indiana, between 1851 and 1853. Mary and husband Lewis moved to Miami County, Kansas, 1870-1880, then to Dighton Township, Lane County, Kansas, by 1885, and to Garden City, Finney County, Kansas, around 1901.

Lewis served as a Private in Company E of the 148th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. After Lewis’ death, Mary moved in with son Frank, then with her daughter Alice Mary. Lucy Margaret (Rutledge) Faussett, Mary’s sister, later settled just a few counties away, and family tradition says that the two sisters came back to Indiana periodically to visit.

Later Riley and Lovey moved to Wayne County, Iowa, and from there moved to Mercer County, Missouri.

It is unknown when William came to Indiana, but they moved from Parke County between 1900 and 1905. William was a stonemason. He was a member of the Silliman Lodge #66 and Knights of Pythias. He and his brother John were in White’s Band, which played for the laying of the cornerstone of the courthouse. Rachel Bigwood and daughters were admitted into membership at the Earlham Monthly Meeting in 1905. The Nichols family was Quaker.
