Charles Newland was one of twelve children. All completed teachers college and taught school. In 1899 Charlie, the seventh child, was the first of five of the children to go West.

Charlie Ray graduated in 1898 from the Louisville Medical School, now the University of Louisville. In 1899 he was practicing medicine in Utah. He wrote home that he was usually paid in chickens and produce but had received $30.00 for a surgery. He became company doctor for the Utah Copper Company, now Kennicott Mining, in Bingham Canyon, Utah. The family lived in a sixteen-room house with the first floor used as a hospital and the second as the family residence. Lou Ray worked with her husband as a nurse. After a few years, Charlie opened a practice in Salt Lake City.

Jacob enlisted in the 8th Indiana Cavalry, 39th Regiment, in 1864. He was wounded in November 1864 near Waynesboro, Georgia. He was one of General Grant’s bodyguards at the surrender of General Lee.

After his marriage, his family moved to Crawfordsville in 1868, then to Rockville in 1874, and back to Crawfordsville that same year. Jacob’s family, his mother Beulah Bailey, and brother Amasa Walter moved to Kansas in 1877 where Jacob worked for the railroad. Later in his career with the railroad, he invented a coupling device, and even though it was widely used, he never received credit for it. He moved his family to Kansas City, Missouri, about 1889. Jacob and Joan moved from Missouri to California after May 1918. Both Jacob and Joan are buried in Atchison, Kansas.

August Quante immigrated with his parents to Franklin County, Indiana, as an infant. He joined the Indiana 1st Regiment Cavalry in 1862. He emigrated first to Kansas and then moved to Nebraska. He worked outfitting wagon trains and hauling government supplies west.

Elam was the fifth of seven children. In 1840, Elam, age 19, was still living at home with his family, but shortly afterward he entered Indiana Asbury College to begin his studies for the ministry. In 1847 he was admitted on a trial basis to the North Indiana Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In August 1850 he was appointed to serve at South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana. He joined the Northwest Indiana Conference when it formed in 1852 and was appointed minister to the Mishawaka Methodist Episcopal Church in April 1863. Elam died in 1906 at the home of his daughter, Elizabeth (Preston) Anderson. He and Maria had other children.
