The Endress and Rein families immigrated to America to join the Harmony Society founded by George Rapp in Germany. A religious Utopian society, holding all property in common, the Society became a busy and successful farming community. The excellent farmland in Indiana drew the Society there for ten years, but in 1825 it returned to Pennsylvania and built a new town at Economy.

John (Johannes) Endress immigrated to Indiana from Harmony, Butler County, Pennsylvania, to New Harmony, Posey County, Indiana, in 1815. In 1825 he moved with members of the society to Economy, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Very carefully controlled, members of the Economy community had almost no contact with the outside world. As regulations tightened, marriage was banned and celibacy was enforced, causing many young people to withdraw from the society. John (Johannes) Endress, his wife, and his mother-in-law Eva Rosina (Lambert) Rein were among them.

Travis immigrated to Washington Township, Randolph County, Indiana, possibly from Highland County, Ohio, about 1814. He emigrated in 1837 to Henry County, Iowa.

Although the family name was changed from Adcock to Emery by the Indiana General Assembly on 22 January 1835, the family has generally spelled the name Emry. Harriett Emry, a granddaughter, wrote in 1941 that the Adcock name was changed to Emry because the children were being teased at school about their name.

From Tucker’s History of Randolph County, Indiana: “The first settler in Washington Township may have been Travis Adcock…”

George was a miller at three Indiana locations. Existing letters from him indicate that his life was a constant struggle. His second wife, Harriet, became mentally ill and spent much time at Central State Hospital in Indianapolis. His son-in-law, Daniel Taylor, was killed in the Civil War. His sons, Jonathan and Samuel, also served in the war, and Jonathan lost a leg at Chickamauga.

Harriet went with George to Missouri, where they lived at the time of enumeration of the 1870 U.S. census. She apparently died between 1870 and 1880 because in the 1880 U.S. census George is found in Coffee County, Kansas, with his third wife.
