John and Sophia emigrated from Indiana in 1860 to Manhattan, Riley County, Kansas. John served during the Civil War in Company G, 11th Kansas Cavalry. In the 1870’s he operated an inn in Manhattan, Kansas. He moved to Pottawatomie County, Kansas, about 1876.
