James came to Indiana sometime between 1810 and 1820 from Woodford County, Kentucky, and lived in Lawrence, Parke, and Putnam counties. He was educated in a one-room log school. In 1837, along with his brother, John, and with one horse to ride between them, the brothers headed out to the Iowa Territory, nine years before Iowa became a state.

In 1851, James drove an ox team to California to take part in the Gold Rush there, taking six months to complete the journey. After spending two years working up and down the California and Oregon coasts, James returned to Iowa by way of the Isthmus of Panama, having walked across the isthmus.

Oscar started west in the spring of 1850. He started from Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana, overland to Columbus, then by railroad to Madison, by steamboat to Louisville, Kentucky, and another steamboat to St. Louis, Missouri, then by another boat to Kansas City, Missouri, where his parents and family met him. It then took them nine months to cross the plains.

He had a gold stake for a while. Then he became a printer for several publications. He was the Deputy Collector of Customs at San Pedro and a member of the Los Angeles City Council. Macy Street in Los Angeles is named for this family, since the only house on the street for many years was the Macy’s house.

John served in Company G, 13th Regiment of Ohio Cavalry during the Civil War; his papers list his name as Homer J. Lee.

“Ed” was the son of General Jackson Smith and Ada Norman. He spent his entire lift in Indiana and worked as a farmer and also in the stone quarries of Monroe Co. He married Cemilda “Millie” Kinser who was the daughter of William Manson Kinser and Elva Hawkins. They are buried together at the Clear Creek Cemetery in Monroe County.

Alva was born and raised in Indian Creek Township, Monroe County, Indiana. In 1893, he and his first wife, Edith E. Johnston, rode his horse to Bedford, Indiana to get married. He and Edith began their life together in Indian Creek Township. Years later, after Edith had died and he had remarried to Lurie Stipp, he purchased a farm in Pleasant Run Township in Lawrence County, Indiana. That farm was eventually sold and Alva moved to Bloomington, Indiana where he died in 1959.

His obituary names four brothers at the time of his death, Merle Moore, of Kentucky, Melvin Moore of Martinsville, Marvin of Richmond, and Otis C. Moore of Bloomington. The obituary also named four sisters who all lived in Bloomington, Sylvia Linthicum, Vada May, Mary Hardin and Erva Hoy and Lillian Quackenbush of Lyons.

He spent most of his life working in the limestone industry and retired as a foreman for Woolery Stone Company. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served with the Corps of Engineers in Europe. He died in 1989, in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana, and is buried there.
