Lawrence County history records reveal WILLIAM CLARK as among the first 23 land entries in the township in 1820, which was made of 60 sections. Along Salt Creek in those early times, distilleries were an institution of common occurrence. One of the principal in the township was kept by William CLARK, familiarly called “Billy”. His was the frequent resort of the people, with their “little borwn jugs,” for in those days whisky was considered almost as necessary in the household as bread.

In 1863 he went to Douglas County, Illinois and opened the first hardware store in town and went on to real estate and Insurance agent. He was a Mason.

Walter M. Crowe lived in:

Walter Crowe was probably born in either Washington County, where his parents lived in 1860, or in Owen County, where his parents lived in 1870. He was a traveling musician who worked in Indiana and adjacent states. It’s possible he lived in the Chicago area about 1900, although he is not found there in census records. In 1910, he was in Gibson County, Indiana. Efforts to locate him in the 1920 census were not successful. In 1930 he was living in Monroe County with his brother, Benjamin.

Other Information:

This is not contributor’s ancestor. Efforts to locate the date and place of Walter’s first marriage to Gertrude Haines/Haynes, also a musician, were not successful. According to newspapers from Huntington, Indiana, Gertrude sued Walter for divorce in May 1894, and that divorce was granted in June 1894. On June 30, 1904, in Gibson County, Walter married his second wife, Martha A. (Thorn) Cosby Loumiller.

Very little is known about Elizabeth Hyden Pochin and her husband Alfred. Their children, Agnes and Alfred both never married and lived together. Agnes and Alfred lived in Denver, Colorado for a time (per the 1940 census) and both may have died there.

The Freeman family came from North Carolina to Indiana and in 1830, were living in Lawrence County. They moved to Owen County, where Archie was born, in 1933. Archie’s father, Joseph Press Freeman (born 1880 in Owen County) was a farmer. Archie’s brother, Herbert H. Freeman’s son Ronald still lives on the Freeman farm property.

Archie was involved in early auto racing in Indianapolis. Archie moved his family to Milwaukee in 1930 after having five children born in Indiana. Archie worked in Milwaukee as manager of Milwaukee Truck Service, Inc. In 1947, the family relocated to Escanaba, Delta County, Michigan, where he was manager for Clairmont Transfer Company.

Archie enjoyed entertaining and golfing. After his retirement in 1967, he spent his winters in Florida.
