She was also a teacher of Latin, German and algebra. She was active in many civic organizations in Durham, North Carolina.

James D. Nicholson emigrated from Scotland in 1840. He arrived in Indiana in about 1842. With the exception of two periods in his life – between 1866 and 1882 and between 1907 until his death in 1908 – he spent all of his life in Parke County, Indiana.

Julia was born to Noah Simpson Grindle and Elizabeth Ann Balding. She lived in Indiana for most of her life, except for a brief period when she and her family were living in Iowa. She married William Cleaster Bryant who was the son of Christopher Myers Bryant and Martha Beard. Julia died one year after the birth of her youngest child. William was a farmer born to Christopher Myers Bryant and Martha Beard. He spent most of his time in Indiana except for a period when his family was living in IL and another period where he lived in Iowa briefly before moving back to Indiana. He married Julia Louise Grindle who was the daughter of Noah Simpson Grindle and Elizabeth Ann Balding. He and his wife are buried at Kennedy Cemetery in Vigo County.

Garrett’s family was in Indiana before 1823 when he married Nancy Williams. He had purchased land in February of that year in Greene Township of Morgan County. He moved to Iowa in 1836 and to Kingston in Des Moines County, Iowa, in 1852.

Garret was a farmer, and he served in the Black War in 1832 as a private in Benton County’s 40th MTDD Riflemen, Indiana Militia. He was appointed Louisa County, Iowa, School District #5 Monitor in 1847.

Fernando’s father, Lewis, came to Indiana from New York in 1818. Fernando was a farmer until he volunteered as a soldier in the Civil War. He enlisted with the 7th Indiana Infantry and fought in 32 battles, including Gettysburg. He moved his family to Illinois and died there in 1917.

Mary Catherine’s father settled near Frankton in the 1830’s. Her first husband, John Wesley King, enlisted in October 1864 in the 17th Regiment, Indiana Infantry. He died of typhoid fever at the US Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky, during his service. His remains were later moved to Mount City National Cemetery.

Mary Catherine and her second husband moved to Edwards County, Kansas between 1875 and 1877. Their last five children were born in Edwards County. Mary died there and is buried in Trotter Cemetery.

James immigrated to Indiana from Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, in 1881. He first lived in Otter Creek Township, Vigo County, Indiana, and then moved to Nevins Township in Vigo County. He left Indiana between 1910 and 1920, going first to Henderson County, Kentucky, and then settled in Royalton, Franklin County, Illinois.

While living in Wales, James worked in the mines. When he came to the United States, he continued in the mining industry and was superintendent of the mines while in Kentucky.

James was very fond of dogs and was an avid hunter.
