Caroline emigrated from Indiana about 1860 to Butler Township, Branch County, Michigan.

Edwin I. Dunham, a mechanic, was the first in his city to succumb to “La Grippe,” which developed into pneumonia. Dying at 37 years old, he left his wife with five young children, the oldest of whom was nine years old.

David and Jane Parkhurst immigrated to Indiana in 1836 from Smith County, Tennessee. They resided at Nineveh, Johnson County, Indiana, and then moved in 1851 to Effingham County, Illinois.

Jane’s mother was either full-blooded or onehalf Cherokee Indian and was said to have had a very bad temper.

The family of Ezekiel Parkhurst, David’s son, had a rather turbulent life. Cousins in Tennessee maintain that Ezekiel’s second wife murdered him after 1870 in Smith County, Tennessee, by putting poison in his coffee. She left quickly for Chicago after his death and was never charged with the crime. Later, one of Ezekiel’s sons, John C. Parkhurst, married Martha Younger, purported to be a sister of the Younger brothers who rode with the Jesse James gang. Another of Ezekiel’s sons, Robert S. Parkhurst, moved to Missouri, where his second wife, it is said, stabbed him to death, took his money, and escaped to Texas. Apparently Ezekiel’s family had a streak of bad luck, especially with second wives.

Nelson Howlett immigrated to Indiana about 1820 with his father and stepmother. Nelson’s father, William, was a Revolutionary War soldier and sailor.

He had extensive holdings in Jennings County, Indiana, which he sold to join a wagon train
traveling to Oregon in the spring of 1851. Somewhere in eastern Oregon, he died of a “bite of a buffalo gnat” and was buried along the Oregon Trail at the Birch Creek Crossing, now in Malheur County, Oregon, not far from Huntington. His widow and children became pioneers in Oregon, where Lydia Howlett married a man from the same wagon train who had also been widowed on the Oregon Trail.

George was a miller at three Indiana locations. Existing letters from him indicate that his life was a constant struggle. His second wife, Harriet, became mentally ill and spent much time at Central State Hospital in Indianapolis. His son-in-law, Daniel Taylor, was killed in the Civil War. His sons, Jonathan and Samuel, also served in the war, and Jonathan lost a leg at Chickamauga.

Harriet went with George to Missouri, where they lived at the time of enumeration of the 1870 U.S. census. She apparently died between 1870 and 1880 because in the 1880 U.S. census George is found in Coffee County, Kansas, with his third wife.
