As Harry and his family moved west, he worked as a carpenter, building houses, buildings, and coffins to earn enough to move further west. He returned to Indianapolis after the death of his second wife, but then moved on to Tajique, New Mexico, where he bought a ranch, a 160 acre homestead.

Harry served in the 3rd Artillery in 1898 during the Spanish-American War and was a corporal when he was discharged.

Nathan Perry France was born and raised in Indiana. He studied at seminary out of state but returned to Indiana afterwards to spend his life as a preacher for the United Brethren Church of Christ in 15 cities throughout the southern part of the state. He retired in Anderson, where he died in 1963.

Carrie Catherine Arford was born and raised in Indiana. She attended college out of state but returned to Indiana afterwards to spend her life as a preacher’s wife, travelling with her husband who was a preacher for the United Brethren Church of Christ in 15 cities throughout the southern part of the state.

Gordon France was the youngest of three sons born to Rev. Nathan Perry France and Carrie Catherine Arford of Grant Co., IN. He attended the University of Indianapolis and graduated magna cum laude in 1933. He served as class president and was active in the school’s tennis and baseball teams. In 2001, members of his baseball team were admitted to the University of Indianapolis Hall of Fame in recognition of their 13-0 season during Gordon’s senior year. He later served on the Board of Trustees for the University and became Trustee Emeritus. Hewas also involved in civic affairs for the community of Anderson, IN where he was active on the school board, the city council, the board of the YMCA, various non-profit community organizations, the Masons, Kiwanis, and the Boy Scouts of America. He was also active with the United Brethren/Methodist Church.

He spent most of his life in Indiana except for a brief period during World War II when he was living in Ohio and working towards the war effort. After the war, he returned to Indiana where he remained until his death in 2009.

The Smithers family came to Indiana between 1830 and 1840. Although born in Madison County, Indiana, Julia Ann was taken to live in Parker County, Texas, by an uncle in the late 1850’s. She and her three brothers had been orphaned. In the 1860 U.S. census, she is found living with the J. Kidwell family and she later married a Kidwell. She and her husband were farmers and teachers.

Mary Catherine’s father settled near Frankton in the 1830’s. Her first husband, John Wesley King, enlisted in October 1864 in the 17th Regiment, Indiana Infantry. He died of typhoid fever at the US Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky, during his service. His remains were later moved to Mount City National Cemetery.

Mary Catherine and her second husband moved to Edwards County, Kansas between 1875 and 1877. Their last five children were born in Edwards County. Mary died there and is buried in Trotter Cemetery.

Edna worked as a clerk. She died at her daughter’s home in Cincinnati, and both she and Henry Frederick are buried in Lot 18 of the Huntersville Cemetery in Huntersville, Madison, Indiana.
