Joseph served in Company D, 63rd Regiment, Indiana Volunteers, and Company K, 116th Indiana Volunteers during the Civil War. According to the family stories, he was a prisoner of war at Andersonville. Joseph W. Davis died in Kansas of a service-connected disability. His wife Nancy died in the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Pitts, in Lafayette, Indiana. She is buried with her husband in Butler County, Kansas.

George S. Stocks

In 1876 the Stocks moved to Butler County, Kansas, taking Harriett’s younger brothers, John and Joseph Arthur, with them. The Stocks family then moved on to Oklahoma Territory, where they took another homestead.

About ten years after the Stocks moved to Kansas, Joseph and Nancy Minerva (Janes) Davis also emigrated from Indiana to Butler County, Kansas.
