John came to Hendricks County, Indiana, with his parents in 1824 and moved to Hamilton County with them in 1830. He was a farmer.

He left Indiana about 1877 when he moved to Crawford County, Kansas, with one of his brothers. While the rest of the family and some of the older children remained in Indiana, John and his brother Edward’s family moved on to Kansas.

After his father died in about 1840, Davis was bound out. On receiving his freedom at age 21, he continued to work for others. After his marriage, he began to farm for himself. He participated in 32 engagements during the Civil War as a member of the 9th Indiana Battery and the 3rd Indiana Artillery. He was on the boat “Ellipse” when it exploded, after which he was in the Marine Hospital in Evansville for two months. His service lasted from February 1862 until March 1865, and he lost sight in one eye during the war. After returning home, he bought his first farm of 60 acres. He eventually had 170 acres of well-cultivated land with a substantial set of farm buildings in Parke County. They left Tangier, Parke County, Indiana, in 1896 for Fitzgerald, Georgia. They celebrated their 50th anniversary at a dinner held by the Grand Army of the Republic and Women’s Relief Corp in Fitzgerald, Georgia.

William Marshall

William Marshall

It is not known when and where William was born. He was killed in 1831 along the Red River in Arkansas. He was married to a Delaware Indian and was moving west with her people.

He was a partner with William Connor at Conner’s Trading Post along the White River in Hamilton County, Indiana. He left the state in 1820.

Elizabeth lived north of Connersville in Fayette County; in Indianapolis, Marion County; and in New Britton and Noblesville in Hamilton County. After John Conner died, she lost the large farm and moved to Noblesville, where she did sewing in a shop. In March 1885, she, her second husband, and daughters Nell and Leota went to Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Lavina went to live with her Grandmother Conner in Indianapolis. Hiram went to live with his Uncle Ham in Nebraska.
