Nancy lived in Delaware, Grant, and Jasper counties in Indiana before emigrating in 1859 from Kentland, Newton County, Indiana. The family settled in Blue Rapids Township, Marshall County, Kansas, in 1860. They moved to Cedar Township, Wilson County, Kansas, in 1867. Then in 1882, they homesteaded 160 acres in Ferndale, Washington, where Hezekiah and his three sons set up the first steam sawmill in the county.

Evline’s stepmother, Lois C. Layton, put her in an orphanage when her father died in 1889. At age 15, she was adopted by the George A. Monroe, Sr. family, originally from Michigan City, who now made their home in Ferndale, Washington. After her marriage, she began to wonder about her family. Her mother, Estella, had married John F. Neu, and was living in Omaha Nebraska. They were reunited in 1907. After her divorce in 1920 from Jacob Shelter, Evline became a camp cook for logging camp #9 above Hamilton, Washington.

The family settled near Leavenworth, Crawford County, Indiana, by the 1860 census. They had come from Conneaut Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. They moved briefly to Wisconsin, then to Taylor County, Iowa, where they were for the 1870 and 1880 censuses. William and Diadema next moved to Quincy, Branch County, Michigan, then back to Iowa around 1890.
