After that, she lived in Nevada before moving to California to live with her daughter in 1944. Her husband died in a railroad accident. He worked for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad.

John Conner

John Conner

After his mother’s death when he was young, John went to live with his uncle, William Conner, at Horseshoe Prairie (now Conner Prairie) in Hamilton County, Indiana. He left with the Delaware Indians when the tribe moved to Kansas in 1820. John never married.

John lived in Delaware and Hamilton counties in Indiana before he left from what is now Prairie Town, Hamilton County, in 1820. He spoke English, Spanish, and several Native American languages; thus he was a guide and interpreter for many expeditions and governments, both federal and state. In 1858, he became the Principal Chief of the Delaware in Kansas.

John moved to Indiana as a young man, in the late 1820’s,with his parents, from Randolph County, NC. They first settled in Hendricks Co., IN and by 1835, his father had a land grant in Hamilton Co., IN, where they moved.

After John married and had children, he moved his family to Crawford Co., KS. During the 1870’s, John’s brother, Edward D. Rushton, followed John by moving his family there. John was a farmer.

Robert Bruce Bascom was born in Switzerland County, Indiana in 1839 to Carley H. Bascom and Elizabeth Potter. He enlisted as a musician in the company band of the 16th Indiana Infantry. He mustered out on 23 May 1862 in Washington, D.C.

He first married Margaret Littlefield on 1 Mar 1863 in Switzerland County. Margaret died on 15 May 1866. They had one child, Edward H. Bascom. On 4 November 1866, Robert married Olive Bovard in Ohio County, Indiana. Olive was born in 1847 and was the daughter of Isaac C. Bovard and Ursula Shepherd. Robert and Olive had nine children and lived in Ohio County where Robert worked as a farmer and dry goods merchant.

Robert died on 10 Mar 1907 in Ohio County. Olive died many years later, in 1926, also in Ohio County. They were buried in Littlefield Cemetery in Switzerland County, Indiana, along with their daughter, Jessie Florence Bascom.

Alexander lived in Noblesville, Hamilton County, and Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. Helen died in childbirth shortly after their marriage; the child died, too. He attended New York Law School at Poughkeepsie, and was admitted to the bar. He was a member of the Indiana General Assembly, but lost his bid for U.S. Senate three times. He was actively involved in the campaign for Abraham Lincoln. He was appointed postmaster of Indianapolis in 1861. He and two others owned the Indianapolis Journal for several years, selling it in 1870. He was chairman of the Republican Central Committee 1868-1872. In 1872, he moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he practiced law. He was a member of the Nebraska State Senate for three terms, serving as its president for two years.
