Hiram came to Jennings County, Indiana, in 1844 and was living in Westport, Decatur County, when the family moved to Iowa in 1869. In his early years, he taught school. About 1881 he was ordained to the ministry for the Church of the Brethren. The surname is also spelled Barrickman and Bergman

David was a veterinary surgeon; he left Indiana before 1877. Gertrude was a sister to Dr. William J. Mayo and Dr. Charles H. Mayo; her family left Indiana in early 1855. The Berkman and Mayo families both lived in homes on the site of the older portion of the Mayo Clinic building.

Christopher immigrated to near Vernon, Jennings County, Indiana, in 1851, and emigrated from Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana, in 1854. He served in the 3rd Regiment, Company F, Minnesota Volunteers in the Civil War. He was a veterinary surgeon and worked with the fire department for ten years. He had acquired a competence in the manufacture of patent medicines and had investments in real estate. He was a member of the Masons, I.O.O.F., and A.O.U.W.
