Robert emigrated from Jackson County, Indiana, to Albion, Monroe County, Iowa, in 1854. His parents were both born in Scotland, and it is said that they were educated at Glasgow University. Since they believed so strongly in education, they organized a school in their home and invited other children in the area to attend. Of their ten children, a daughter Annabell was born in Scotland. All of the others were born in Indiana.

Robert was the only child in his family to leave Indiana. After his parents’ deaths, he went in search of more education. At first he went to Albion, Iowa, where he boarded with a family, worked on their farm, and attended school. In 1855 he secured a teaching position in Clarinda, Adams County, Iowa. In 1856 he decided to move to Kansas, where he bought property near Topeka in the spring, improved it, sold it in the fall of 1856, and returned to teaching.

At the outbreak of the War Between the States, Robert was mustered into service at Troy, Kansas, into Company B, 13th Kansas Volunteer Infantry. He was mustered out at Little Rock, Arkansas, in June 1865 and discharged at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

After the war, he bought property at Doniphan County, Kansas, and married a former pupil Mary Brock. In addition to the children listed, they had two other children who died young. In November 1865 he was elected state representative and served to 1868.
