The Barr family came to Indiana in the 1850’s. John Andrew graduated from DePauw University and Indiana University and lived in Gary, Lake County, Indiana from about 1935 to 1942. He was a lawyer and in private practice in Gary for several years before going to work for Montgomery Ward & Co. in Chicago as the company’s chief labor lawyer and moving to Wilmette, Cook County, Illinois. He moved up through the corporate ranks, was named Secretary and, in 1955, became President and Chairman of the Board. He left Wards in 1965 to become Dean of the School of Business at Northwestern University. He retired in 1975.

The family left from Kentland, Newton County, Indiana, after James was born in May 1876. Newton was born in Iroquois County, Illinois. They arrived in Florence, Kansas, in 1884. John was in Company A of the 128th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers, serving from November 1863 to January 1866. He was with Sherman on the march to the sea and also fought at Gettysburg.

John’s second wife, Jennie, later married Frank Hoffman.

Mary’s family immigrated to Turman Township, Sullivan County, Indiana, before her birth in the early 1800’s.

After her first husband died, Mary moved to Van Buren County, Iowa, where her sister Elizabeth Bryant and husband, John Baird, had settled. Her brother, Thomas Bryant, a disabled Civil War veteran also lived there.

In 1882, Mary was again widowed and her married daughter, Amelia, is living there as well.
