The family settled in Blue Rapids Township, Marshall County, Kansas, in 1860. They moved to Cedar Township, Wilson County, Kansas, in 1867. Then in 1882, they homesteaded 160 acres in Ferndale, Washington, where Hezekiah and his three sons set up the first steam sawmill in the county.
